FARTHER ALONG

I have just learned that Doc Watson passed away this morning May 29th at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem NC following abdominal surgery last week!

There would have been no Sierra Records if were not for Doc Watson. Doc was the one along with Clarence and Gram a bit later that encouraged me to start a record label. An album of recordings of the Doc Watson family was to be the first album on my new label. Though that was not to be, Doc was always my first inspiration. He now joins his son Merle along with Earl, Bill, Doug, Clarence and a host of others that have gone.

I will always remember those three weeks of 'heaven' in late summer of 1971 traveling with Doc and Merle to festivals up and down the Eastern seaboard. I guess it was my first job as a "roadie".

He will always remain in my heart.

Douglas Dillard, sadly has passed away on May 16, 2012 in Nashville TN. "The best banjo player there ever was" as the late Jim Dickson would say. We will all miss his playing but most of all his big smile. Thanks Doug for all you meant to us and especially to Sierra Records and me.

Noted A&M Records photographer, Jim McCrary, passed away on April 29th. His iconic photos of the Flying Burrito Bros, Gram Parsons, Dillard & Clark and so many more will be familar to you. Jim was a great guy and he now joins in the great beyond yet another great photographer who only now I learned, passed away last Fall, Barry Feinstein. Barry's photos of Gram Parsons, Flying Burrito Bros, Byrds, let alone Bob Dylan and so many more, will live forever. It was a prilivege to have known both photographers through the late Jim Dickson.

They join the passing of Chris Ethridge, formerly of the Flying Burrito Bros, Willie Nelson's band and numerious recordings sessions including those with Gram Parsons and Clarence White. Chris played electric bass on what was to be Gram and Clarence's final stage performance together in June 1973. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.

This great loss along with the passing of bluegrass and banjo legend, Earl Scruggs in Nashville TN and Levon Helm of "The Band", is yet another blow to the music we all love.

Still available is the 2CD "Legacy" version of "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" but as soon as Sony/CBS exhausts their inventory on this and other Byrds releases, they too will all be deleted.
